Polyester microplastic fibers in soil increase nitrogen loss via leaching and decrease plant biomass production and N uptake

چکیده

Abstract Microplastic contamination, like other global change factors, can induce effects on ecosystem functions and processes, affecting various soil biophysical properties. However, of such contaminants nutrient cycles in agroecosystems are still poorly understood. We here performed two pot experiments to investigate the effect polyester microplastic fibers (PMFs) physical properties, nitrogen cycle, plant performance a maize-based agroecosystem. Moreover, we followed N loss via leaching contaminated or not with PMFs by simulating heavy rainfall events that mimic future scenario climate change. Our results show (at concentration 0.5% w/w) jeopardize agroecosystem sustainability properties particular macro- microporosity, performance. In particular, found PMF contamination limited crop growth uptake circa 30%, consequently increased leaching. Overall, our findings may pose problems agricultural challenges food security environmental protection.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizas Reduce Nitrogen Loss via Leaching

The capacity of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal root systems to reduce nitrate (NO₃⁻) and ammonium (NH₄⁺) loss from soils via leaching was investigated in a microcosm-based study. A mycorrhiza defective tomato mutant and its mycorrhizal wildtype progenitor were used in this experiment in order to avoid the indirect effects of establishing non-mycorrhizal control treatments on soil nitrogen cycl...

Nitrogen Uptake and Leaching on Greens

Superintendents know that management of putting greens is an art. Greens are often made of high-porosity sand that does not retain water or nutrients very effectively. Also, putting green grasses are cut extremely short, which does not allow a deep root system to develop and take up nutrients from deep in the soil profile. Therefore, putting greens require frequent irrigation and fertilizer app...

Nitrogen deposition and management practices increase soil microbial biomass carbon but decrease diversity in Moso bamboo plantations

Because microbial communities play a key role in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling, changes in the soil microbial community may directly affect ecosystem functioning. However, the effects of N deposition and management practices on soil microbes are still poorly understood. We studied the effects of these two factors on soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and community composition in Moso bam...
